The Cardinals have had a great offseason, but they also have one big question mark at quarterback.
After throwing a career-high eight touchdown passes against the Rams, it would be nice to have a quarterback who can throw the ball and make plays for his team.
The Cardinals are hoping to get a jump on their competition, and a quarterback like Carson Palmer could help.
Palmer has thrown for more than 400 yards in three straight games and is averaging more than 16 yards per pass attempt.
Arizona has only lost two games this season by a combined score of 55-14.
“We’re not looking to win with one quarterback,” offensive coordinator Greg Olson said.
“The challenge for us is we have a lot of depth.”
That depth will be tested this week.
The Rams have one of the best defenses in the league.
They rank third in sacks (28), fourth in interceptions (15), fifth in passing yards (5,077), and second in points (25,634).
They have had just one interception this season and they have not lost a game in their last five.
“I think we’re going to get our hands on him,” Rams defensive end Jared Allen said.
“(The quarterback) is going to have to step up and do something.”
The 49ers will have to hope that the offense is on par with their record-setting play, but this is not the year for a breakout performance from the quarterback.
The 49er offense has averaged just 1,000 yards per season since the 2012 season, and they will likely be without Colin Kaepernick for the foreseeable future.
But coach Kyle Shanahan knows how to play defense, and this will be a big test for the defense.
The Falcons are also in a similar position as the 49er defense.
They’ve lost two straight by a total of 16 points.
Shanahan has a defense that ranks second in total yards allowed per game (6.8) and second to last in passing defense (118.9).
The Falcons also rank fourth in sacks, fourth in interception rate (15.8 per game), and last in points allowed (20,853).
They will be hoping that quarterback Matt Ryan is healthy enough to play.
The two are only in the second season of their contract.
“This is the first game of the year,” Shanahan said.
