The new streaming services are designed to appeal to a much wider audience and to bring in new users, but a recent report from market research firm IHS suggests that a lot of consumers are still not buying the new streaming offerings, or have yet to do so.
The report by research firm Ipsos found that in December, only 44 per cent of people who have watched a streaming service on an average day in the previous 12 months had bought a subscription.
Only 35 per cent had purchased a subscription and 19 per cent hadn’t.
While this is a relatively small percentage of people, Ipsos says it highlights the fact that streaming services still aren’t widely understood and consumers have a difficult time connecting with the new services.
It also points to the need for more research to better understand the value proposition of the new offerings.
In the case of Netflix, the report notes that while it has a higher upfront price of £9.99, the total cost of the service is around £5.95.
A Netflix spokesperson told the Telegraph: “As with any new product, we have to be open to feedback and understand consumers’ needs and needs can vary across different age groups, geography and income brackets.”

“Despite the low initial price of a Netflix subscription, the company’s latest figures show that it is growing rapidly and continues to add subscribers every day.
According to the company, in the second quarter of 2018, the average number of subscribers in the UK was 449,000, with the majority of them coming from the 18 to 34 age group.
Netflix has also added more movies, including The Handmaid’s Tale, to its catalogue, with over a million movies now available to watch online.
There are also more options to watch TV, with Amazon’s Prime Video and Netflix’s own original shows like Stranger Things, Daredevil and Game of Thrones being available to stream.
As with most of the streaming services, Netflix has also set up its own website, where users can log in to their account to access all of the titles they own.
However, many people are still finding it difficult to access the service, with some having problems accessing the service from their computers.
Even though there is a lot more to streaming than just watching movies and TV shows on the internet, it is still not easy for many people to access it.
